Aim: Lesson 3. Using a digital camera to take photos. (optional: using a regular camera)

Objectives:

  • Students should be able to convert pictures and use digital images for writing projects.
  • Students should be able to manipulate the pictures with Photoshop.
  • Students should develop their artistic skills in processing their pictures.

Preparations/Procedure:

Set up computer lab with Photoshop, scanners, and connection with digital cameras.

1. Send students out to take their photos, or look through their hard copies and select an appropriate one to scan, then help them manipulate with Photoshop and insert into documents.

2. Introduce the use of scanner, in case students want to use an old photo they already have in their possession.

3. Teach or review basic elements of Photoshop: selection, resizing, cropping, adding text, and saving.

4. Open MS Word document to insert the picture file into document.

5. Make a bulletin board to display photos for comments. A web site can also be created for this purpose.

Discussion:

1. What is a digital camera? How is it different from a regular camera?

2. How do we use a digital camera?

3. How do we download pictures from camera?

4. How do we scan a picture into a computer?

Assignment Project:

Select a photograph, manipulate it, and write a composition about it.

My School, My family, A Scene in New York... Provide the caption for their photo. Should students take a photo of something they find attractive; an element of their culture visible in NYC; shots of their neighborhood to juxtapose with photos of their old neighborhoods/cities; you (or they) choose!
